Need to Replace My Rear Bumper. What Issues?
Well, after going almost 30 years without any type of accident or ticket, I was rear ended last Sunday. It appears the only damage is a crack across the entire width of my plastic rear bumper. The other guy's insurance company is being very fair (I know I am surprised), but I believe I can do the replacement myself and pocket a few bucks.
Here are my concerns (one detailing related, and one not so much):
1) I would be purchasing a "painted to match" rear plastic bumper. Is there any reason to be concerned about the finish on this? Should I worry about orange peel?
2) For you guys who are more "car guys" than me, if there appears to be no other damage - all the panels still line up, car tracks properly, etc. - Is there any reason to be concerned about damage under the bumper to the absorber components?
Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

Hey mk9750.
1, yes paint to match doesn't always match, you will usually have 3+ alternates for 1 paint code. Orange peel is usually not a big deal, unless its a tri coat color.
2, behind your bumper cover you will usually have an impact absorber ( foam or plastic ) that can be damaged,
and if it is front wheel drive or independent rear suspension i would think about a 4 wheel alignment.

Strong,
Very helpful, thank you!
The insurance estimate included $47.00 for an absorber, so I assume at least they think what's in there is foam. I've been able to find those online for $51.00 - $57.00, so I bet they're right. The plastic one I found as an option is about $125.00. For that amount, I might include one of those when I order the bumper, just so I don't have to do the job twice.
Car is probably due for an alignment anyway, so getting one done now is a great idea. I'm not feeling any issues, but it never hurts to make sure. And technically, someone else is paying for it, I guess.
Any opinion on how to prevent the paint match issue?
Again, thanks much. I do appreciate the help!

You could buy a primer colored bumper and bring it to a pro paint shop with your color code and that would probably ensure a better color match

Hey mk9750
The paint match issue is very difficult and i don't have a good answer other than having it blended on the car.
