Thanks for all the advice guys. The bicycle wrench sounds promising indeed. Unfortunately, I live in a town that doesn't even have a Dunkin Donuts, much less a bicycle shop. Order for the wrench from AG going in today. To make the shipping worthwhile I will have to order some other stuff as well. I will have to justify to the other half why a wrench costs over a hundred bucks.

That's a good idea and your right, those will work nicely as long as they have the correct size which they should. I have a couple of different sizes and even though they're shorter than the one that comes with the Porter Cable unit they'll still work.
I'm sort of surprised that these units aren't designed with a spring loaded pin that would lock the rotating mechanism allowing for the pad to be spun off easily. I have a 42 year old body sander that has this feature and it works slicker than snot!
