1949 Chevy 5-Window Pickup Extreme Makeover - Pictures & Videos

1949 Chevy 5-Window Pickup Extreme Makeover - Pictures & Videos

Below is a short video I took using my iPhone 4 to show the swirls and scratches and that the entire exterior of this streetrod truck is covered with overspray paint plus some high resolution pictures to document the same.

We'll be using Scholl Concepts products to undo all the damage and restore a true show car finish on this very cool 1949 Chevy 5-Window Pickup Truck.

And be sure to click the video to check out the Crazy Cow Interior!

How to document the before condition of a vehicle before detailing it.

First frame-up the shot so people know what area of the car you're photographing.

    Next Zoom In
Then zoom in on the section of paint you want your reader to focus on that was captured in the framed-up shot.

Looks pretty good from 15 feet away but there's no brilliant clear shine because the paint is covered with overspray and filled with swirls and scratches.

    Hand Sanding = Tracers

Below are what look like Tracers left in the paint after wetsanding and compounding. Tracers are straight line scratches from moving your hand and your sandpaper in straight lines. Often times the person doing the wetsanding, cutting and buffing will not remove 100% of the sanding marks with their compounding step s they show up in the paint.

First thing we wiped the exterior and inside the bed clean using Detailer's Waterless Auto Wash.

The reason why you don't wash classics is shared here,

This Pickup was covered with yellow overspray paint. Here's what a patty of detailing clay looks like after claying just the driver's half of the hood.

    After

So before we could remove the swirls, scratches and orange peel the first thing we needed to do was decontaminate the paint. For this we used products from Nanoskin...

After removing all the overspray, the next step will be to use Scholl Concepts to remove the swirls and scratches.

After we removed all over the overspray, next we the Scholls S3 with the Purple Foam Cutting pads to remove the swirls and scratches.

We followed this with the Schools S40 and the blue foam finishing pads to maximize gloss and clarity.

To seal the paint we applied the Schools Vintage Paste Wax by machine.

From the description of the product I'd say "yes".

This is my first time using these products. Nothing like taking on someone else's pride and joy for a training session.

Seriously... these are high quality products and we're using the best tools and always good technique...

If you watch the first video I state that I'm going to find out how much paint the painter sprayed on the hood and if after hearing his answer I feel comfortable with the amount then we're going to machine sand the hood to remove the peel.

Just heard from Mike the truck owner who called his painter and here's his reply,

He said there's enough base coat and 2 coats of clear. He said you can use 1500 if you want to. He had to use extra clear to make sure the blend went well.

    Have at it man!!!!! -Mike

So this will be the first thing we knock out tomorrow on this project and that's sanding the hood.

Re: 1949 Chevy 5-Window Pickup Extreme Makeover - Pictures & Videos

I had a ton of fun meeting everyone and coming out tonight! Hope to make the occasional makeover again!

We used the scholl stuff-- pads were great, but I'm not sold on the compound for DA application. The mid level polish and fine polish works great on any da though. The wax was a real soft buttery like wax that spread on easily enough, but dusted a little on removal.

1949 Chevy Five Window Pickup Results

Mike, those new pads used last night to remove orange peel were pretty remarkable. It was also good to see again how to always start with the least aggressive product (pad and/or compound) so you resolve the problem and still leave as much paint on the car as possible. Great night! See you guys next time. Den
