Re: Meguiar's Big Rig Extreme Makeover - Pictures & Videos!

Standing with my back to the shrubs and trees, lit up the side with my flash...

Then focused on the surface without the flash...

Here's where I'm going to do my Test Spot. Before buffing out ANYTHING, especially anyting very large, I cannot stress enough the importance of doing a test spot and dial-in your process and make sure you can make one small area look good or at least look good enough to meet your expectations BEFORE buffing out the entire rig.

This first shot is with the flash of my camera...

Now I'll use the Flex Swirl Finder Light, if you look closely in the picture below you can see me holding it in the refelction of the paint before I turn it on.

Now I've turned on the Flex Swirl Finder Light and taken a picture with my Canon...

After talking with Jason Rose about our approach, we both agreed taking a one-step approach using a one-step cleaner/sealant should be tired first. IF this works, we'll be able to,

    1. Clean up the paint - remove road film and staining
    2. Reduce the swirls and scratches
    3. Do the paint polishing in one step (very important)
    4. Save our arms with a product that is known to wipe off easy even when used outside in direct sun.

Here's I'm using the Rupes Bigfoot 21 with a W9006 foam finishing pad and the M20 on about speed setting 5

I made 6-7 slow section passes over the letter "C" and surrounding paint for about a 2' by 2' area.

Soft, careful wipe-off after allowing the M20 to dry to a haze....

    Inspection time....

    Looks good.

1000 Times better than before in one-step using VERY non-aggressive products.

Here's a cropped out section from the above picture and as you can see the results are not perfect but we're not aiming for perfection with swirls this bad in a project this big that we only want to do ONE STEP to.

That rig looks great. I'm wondering how long it would take one guy to do the whole job? Was the roof done? If so, how?

There were about 5 of us involved in washing and drying the truck and we started around 12pm and finished around 1:30pm. I suppose you could use simple math and multiply 5 guys x 1.5 hours. I would say 7.5 to 8 hours for one person to wash and dry the truck (includes truck & trailer).

We took a short break and started buffing around 2pm. The truck and clean up was completed around 8pm. There were about 13-15 guys total that helped polish the truck, including wheels, tires, chrome, metal, windows and clean up.

If we say 14 guys X 6 hours = 84 hours. That sounds about right to me, approximately 80+ hours for one person to detail the entire truck using and AIO polish/sealant method on the paint.

The above post was from last Friday and today is the following Wednesday and I'm just now getting back to the pictures from this project. Been working on and finishing up an offline project and I'm happy to say it's finished.

So back to documenting how we tackled this gigantic project!

After dialing-in our test spot so we have a plan of attack, the next thing was to wash the truck to remove all the loose dirt before machine buffing.

The Autogeek Foam Gun to the rescue!

Here's Frank laying down a rich, thick layer of foam using the Meguiar's Hyper Wash....

Andy and I will follow using Boar's Hair Brushes on extension handles extended as far as they will go!

Andy went down the truck washing the top half and I followed him washing the bottom half. No pictures of the bottom half getting washed as I had to put the camera down.

As soon as we finished washing a section of the truck Frank was ready to come back and start rinsing off the suds...

To dry, I used our studio mops also with extendable handles and wrapped Guzzler Microfiber Drying Towels around the head to reach the high sections.

We had to all work as a team and work fast in order to work the soap, rinse the truck and then dry the truck before the sun could get in our way.

Next we move onto the Tractor....
