AutoBell: Good Thing or Bad Thing for Auto Detailers?
AutoBell: Good Thing or Bad Thing for Auto Detailers?
Do you believe establishments such as AutoBell add more business for the professional auto detailer, or take more business away from the professional auto detailer?

AutoBell and the like are car washes, and if a person has been using them, don't think you will talk them out of it. It's a different consumer mentality. It hurts to see a very nice vehicle going thru and knowing that it is being damaged each time, but they appeal to a couple of things.
1. Speed - You can't wash a car that fast, and be that convenient
2. Price - Its cheap
3. Clean - For the most part, this is all people want, and they provide.
They are not the largest chain in NC for nothing.

My belief is that anyone who is here on this site has a passion about cars, and is very discerning about their vehicle appearance and maintenance.
For those not on this site, that group still exists. People that have a passion for cars and is extremely discerning about the appearance and maintenance of their vehicles yet do not have the time, knowledge nor desire to do the work themselves.
That is the particular group I, (and I'm sure many others on AGO), strive to reach.
There is room in the whole spectrum for local car-washes, franchise car washes, dealer detailers, etc... Much like there is room in the market for fast food chains all the way up to 5-Star Bistro's.
What we provide here on AGO is boutique, explaining that to the layperson is where the skill comes in.

I do have clients that take their vehicle to an tunnel wash regardless of what I tell them. Those cars get nothing more aggressive than an AIO twice a year, which has a high profit margin for me and they are thrilled with the results compared to a tunnel wash. Some of those folks do have special interests cars that are only hand washed (by me or them), but they are people with more money than time and taking the car to the tunnel wash just works best for their lifestyle.

People who visit places like these are not your target clientele. Plus, you'll always get a customer of 2 from these establishments here and there who want better work. I don't even worry about them.

Yep, it's a different demographic. Like comparing McD's to Five Guys to steak house and their share of the lunch crowd.
Some people just want cheap and fast with no care for quality, ie. food is food, and a wash is a wash. Some prefer the middle ground with a little better service and quality. Then some prefer good quality and are willing to wait and to pay for it.
It's hard to get the first group to want to jump up to the top group without a major discount and when they do they expect the world in return.
We want customers that are looking for quality and that are willing to pay for it.

I used to work there. That's how I got my "start". It's just a production type of wash. Hard to talk people out of it when they can get a full "detail" for $20-25 compared to $100-150. And add in the time difference. 10-15 minutes vs a few hours....
