I think I just got the answer, because of the way you worded it. I've always thought of it as finding new spots, but they are actually abandoning old spots. They don't want to be predictable. In case a predator figures out where they're sleeping, and lies in wait. Sounds like something you'd here on a wildlife documentary.

I could totally see that making sense in their heads. And of course it would be built into their natural instincts so they may not really have much of a say in their actions there, which would explain why we as humans find it somewhat annoying…

I dunno about you, but I find it just a tad bit annoying when my cat had been enjoying his little hammock that I bought him until 1 day he decided he’s going to avoid it at all costs like it had the Covid or something.
