you can use a picture off your computer, or you can look for a small picture on the web and transfer it. First you need to find something you like, then add it under the USER CP above.

I bookmarked a site for free avatars a while ago but it dosn't show up.
Do a google for Avatars or Free Avatars and you'll find tons of them.

I'm gonna use Killers and then register on a Corvette Forum
