My wife's previous 2002 VW Golf had an OEM paper one that I swapped with a Fram "Fresh Breeze" cabin filter. It did cut down on outside odors but had a poor fit into the cabin air filer housing and allowed a small amount of unfiltered air into the cabin.
I put a Fram "Fresh Breeze" cabin filter in my husband's Subaru Outback. It does seem to make a bit of difference. Price wasn't much different from a regular filter, so why not? On the Outback and my Toyota Avalon, taking the filter out is easy so I pull them every 5000 miles or so and vacuum out the accumulated debris.
