A big job - 20,000 soot covered cars

Can you imagine this? Last week in Japan some 20,000 brand new Toyotas ready for export were covered in soot as a result of an incident at a neighbouring factory. Toyota's solution - get 5,000 factory workers to clean them (4 each). That's a lot of training, a lot of products and a lot of supervision required!

What a shame, all those new cars damaged before they even left the factory yard. I'm sure that they will take great care in cleaning them, but I wonder how much attention they'll give to the resulting swirls and little scratches, or to the thickness of the clear coat? I wouldn't be keen to buy one...

There are no details about the types of vehicles involved or their ultimate destination. The original article in the Japan Times is here.

Boy that really highlights some cultural differences, eh? If that happened at a car plant here and the boss said, ok all of you outside we're going to wash cars...they would be like "say what???" "isn't that somebody else's job?"

    Speaking of cultural differences...

    First, and foremost, in America...
    (and due to EPA regulations):
Would not the cause of this soot, be moot?

Apparently the soot was caused by a power failure next door - a one-off event, thankfully. This kind of thing is not an everyday occurance in Japan.

As for another obvious cultural difference between Japan and the US, it's interesting to note that Toyota is 'thinking about' legal action, while in the States they'd have a phalanx of laywers crowding the lobby.

    "training and supervision"

Maybe, but I have a feeling they are going out there with hoses and rags (or spray products) and it's going to result in some heavily marred toyotas heading out for sale.

I'm frankly surprised they are even cleaning them. As filthy as my car was off the truck from the factory. Why not just send them to the dealers and let them wash them, as they are doing already?

That's a pretty good idea, as the cars will accumulate a bunch of dust / dirt on transit anyway. In addition the cars would surely have protective covering on some panels, lessening the impact of the soot.

However appearances are worth a lot in Japan and I'm sure Toyota is loathe to send dirty cars overseas. I hope you guys don't get these pre-DISO specials!

I'm guessing that this "soot" would be characterized as industrial fallout that may cause some damage to the paint if left on there. That's a pretty big parking lot if it has 23,000 cars in it, eh?
