    Question HELP: Deleted emails returning

I've always used window mail and never had any issues, until now.

When I delete emails I right click on the email, then click delete which sends the email to the trash bin. Deleted emails are kept track of in an "deleted emails" folder. I then right click on the deleted emails folder and a dialog box pops up asking me if I want to permanently delete the deleted messages and I click, "yes". This supposedly removes the deleted emails from the trash bin. It's always worked for me since 2007, until yesterday.

Even if I try re-deleting the returning messages, they still return. What's really bad is the time it's taking to get to new unread emails. When I open my email now I'm showing 300 of 5xxx emails coming in. This is nutz!!!

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Hi Bill:

you probably grew the Outlook pst file beyond its limit, or there's corruption in the file.

There's a Utility already on your computer, but it could be in different places, so you'll have to search for it. The program you are searching for is scanpst.exe. Run that against your Outlook file, and it will repair and compact it and the problems should go away.

scanpst.exe. = "No items match your search"...while searching all programs.

Run that against your Outlook file = Not sure how to go about doing this and it isn't going to work unless I can find the other thing you mentioned.

I do appreciate your post/help though.

Are you using Outlook, or the standard Windows Mail program that came with Windows XP?

Didn't know anyone ever used that. That was the update still included in Vista of the original Windows Mail product. Windows 7 had it removed.

The compact function should also clear any data corruption issues.

The compaction setting is at WM>tools>options>advanced tab>maintenance.

To compact immediately change it to 1>Apply>close WM.

Let it complete, and leave WM alone for a while afterwards, as it will take a while to complete the task.

I changed it to compact the data base on shutdown every 1 days, then there's a box that says. "clean up now". When I click on that box another dialog box pops up with 3 option boxes to click on; remove messages(This will remove all downloaded message bodies), delete(This will delete all headers and message bodies), and reset(This will delete all headers and message bodies and will reset the folder(s) so that headers will be re-downloaded)...each box having a small description. Which one do I click on?

Start with remove messages. Delete will clear your deleted items folder but it will also delete any "expired" messages.

Don't know how much stuff you keep archived, so just like polishes, "start with the least agressive method"

    Re: HELP: Deleted emails returning

Most important emails get their own folder and do not stay in the inbox, rather, seperate, named, folders. I do keep about 900 emails in the inbox, but most are unecessary. I started with remove messages, then closed WM. Won't be by the computer for awhile, so hopefully this gets resolved. Here's to hoping...
