Back into the RC buggy hobby.

Very Cool! Fun hobby for sure.

I got an Associated RC10 Championship Edition (1/10 scale 2wd Buggy) when I was a kid as a birthday present. Got into indoor racing for a bit (besides just regular pounding around) which was a blast.

Sold it to a friend (wish I hadn't) and went a long time without anything RC. Bought an HPI Savage 21 (1/8 scale nitro monster truck) years later, but found with the stock engine it was sooo finicky I quickly lost enthusiasm. Sold that to a coworker who swapped engines and drove the S out of it.
(Edit - just looked at ebay for RC10 CE's, boy now I really wish I hadn't sold it!)

Later was given an Estes proto x (itty bitty quadcopter) by a friend, which set the hook for the flying bug. Went out and bought a Blade Nano QX quadcopter (bigger, but still for indoors). Had a few other friends that bought them as well. When work was slow (high ceiling auto repair shop), we'd do RedBull Air Racing around the 4 hoists on one side of the shop. Work picked up and it got tucked away and forgotten. I should get some new batteries for it, I bet my daughter would get a huge kick out of it.

One thing I miss about RC stuff is how so much of it now seems to only be available Ready To Run. I've got really fond memories of all the time spent in my dining room building my RC10 from a box of a million pieces - all the way down to assembling and filling the oil filled shock absorbers.

Was also fun tinkering with all the different tuning stuff - gearing, electric motors and speed controls, alignment settings, shock oil weight.


You're gonna have to keep us updated with your new hobby! Looking forward to seeing what kinda course you can set up in your area.

I think it's all relative. Hobbies are hobbies, there is no bad one as long as it harms nobody. If it gives happiness outside of work, thats the goal. $1000 on an RC isn't too bad, people spend more on golf, way more on fishing, snowmobiles, atv's, etc, etc. Think of the snowmobilers, which I got out of, you can spend well over $15,000 for any decent machine, $20,000 for the top models. Throw in suite/helmet/etc if you don't have any, insurance (cause they bend you right over a table), trail pass and gas (and none of them are exactly fuel efficiant). Throw in a trailer and hotel if you gotta travel to better trails and snow, and you have a pretty small window (2-3 months) of good riding. Thats high $$/miles ratio.

But, if it makes you happy and you can swing it financially, any hobby is better than one that brings you to a bar stool or casino everynight emptying your pockets that way. When you see people doing whatever hobby with big smiles on their face it's worth it.

Plus every hobby has their own community of good people to add to the social aspect too.

I still have my brother's old RC10 gold pan. Hasn't been driven in years, but I don't plan to get rid of it. My kids call it old rusty.

I was out of the RC game for a long time, but around 2005 I picked up a Traxxas T-Maxx. I think that similar to the HPI Savage.
Sunk a ton of money into it, fixing, modifying...etc.
It was a blast to drive around, but as oneheadlite stated, it was always finicky for tuning. Plus, I got sick of the maintenance of the nitro....and running out of it as well.
I miss the sound and smell though and the big tires and soft suspension made it fun to bomb around on less than smooth surfaces.

Fast forward to ~2014, I sold the T-Maxx and picked up a Stampede 4x4 VXL. Rips pretty good with a 3s Lipo.
I've repaired/modified it as I went along and it's a pretty good runner now.


I've dabbled in flight a little bit. Currently just have a micro drone and helicopter for inside fun. My brain isn't trained for the extra DOF with flight...it's actually the roll that mess me up. I'm fine with a simple rudder control, but add that roll and my brain can't handle it and I usually end up adding roll and bombing into the ground.

I'd like to get something bigger. Been eying up Arrma Kraton 6s or a Traxxas Maxx (not the X-Maxx). Not sure if I'm ready to sink that kind of change into it though (need to pay for engine rebuild for my Mustang).

I agree with oneheadlite, I miss the actual build part. Tamiya has a few different kits available these days. I don't think they are as nice as the old kits (for the money), but would be fun to put one together.

I remember when 1/4 scale was just coming out. Those got crazy expensive, way past that max price even.

It has proven to be a fun hobby. On my 2nd set of tires. And ordered the upgraded oil filled shocks today. LOL.

My 2wd Electric Buggy from back in the day (Associated RC10 CE) had oil filled shocks. It was neat - you could drop it from at least waist height and it just landed like a wet towel (but didn't bang the chassis).
