Re: Forum Nicknames - I still don't get it?

    In a nutshell:

•Due to the innumerable amount of “agencies”,
both public and private, that employ so-called
    ”Reputation Management Companies” to
observe, and report back, on all online activity
associated with ones real name...I prefer the
quasi-anonymity of having a forum nickname.

-Anyway: Isn’t there a long established
tradition that participants in public forums can
be anonymous, if so desired; and, IMO: they
are not going to want to give up that tradition
    anytime soon.

    Additionally:
•The very idea that using my real name would
somehow improve the quality of my postings’
    content is debatable (laughable?).

    -Speaking of my postings’ content:
When you encounter me, I believe that I’ve
made it pretty easy to figure out before hand
    how to deal with me.

I don't know what you mean by that, but your writing style always seems like you're some sort of detailing prophet. LOL! I enjoy your posts.

People have called me CT for over 30 years and the number i wore when i played ball was 18. I think there are people i have known for years that probably don't know my full name, only CT

To those that PM'd me asking for a name change, I've either made the change or replied to you.

Also - years ago, 11 years ago as I type, I wrote this article as an effort to help others in this industry, that is detailers that are online. Or as Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson said in the movie, The Internship, on the line.

Brand Yourself, Brand your Forum Nickname and Brand your Business Name

Here's post #3 from the above thread that shows 3 people, that most of us know or recognize their names, and after considering my thoughts on this topic - agreed with my thoughts and changed their online names, heck some of the have REALLY branded their names since I wrote this article back in 2010 - my how times have changed.

Actually, the number of people that ever take action on a suggestion like this is usually so negligible that it's nothing to worry about.

I've shared this idea with a lot of people in the forum world over the years, most people don't want to use their real names in any way, shape or fashion and that's understandable.

My good friend Nick Chapman is a good example of someone that took the advice and now he has a fairly well recognized name, his forum name use to be some type of "airplane reference", it was n737nc and I kept telling him no one would ever be able to remember it, recognize it or say it.

I won't take credit for convincing either of the below friends of mine to brand their real names but I do remember having conversations with them about it.

Kevin Brown started out as iamwaxman on the forums and now goes by Kevin Brown

And I don't remember that Renny ever used a forum nickname on the forums I've seen him posting to but he also goes by his real name and he too has a stellar reputation in the detailing world.

One thing I've learned for sure though is good branding has value in a good way and bad branding has value in a bad way... always try to brand in a good way...

I also recommended this to other online detailing personalities, at least one guy tried it for a while and then switched back, I never knew why though?

I'll never forget my 1st DetailFest at AG. As I met people there they would say their name and immediately say their screen name. Some that are still here I have forgotten their real names and to me that's a shame.

You might know Bob better by his original nickname, HAL.

    That's right, Bob is actually a super-computer. (From 1968).........
It is no coincidence that man's best friend cannot talk.

    Remember HAL’s grande finale?

A pretty good depiction of how
I’ve got the ‘slows’ here lately.

Re: Forum Nicknames - I still don't get it?

I've used a nickname on forums since forever AND I use one on Facebook, Twitter etc too (though I barely use FB.) I used a nickname since the late 80's and very early 90's when I got into computers etc...
