I'm not in New England, but I've noticed our micro-Ice Age in February really did a number on the roads.
The normal winter freeze/thaw cycle always leads to some problems on streets, but lately I'm seeing holes opening up on our highways which can make things rather exciting when you try to dodge them and avoid all the other traffic. You also get stuck with the "no-win" situations too. We visited some friends in KC two weeks ago and when exiting the highway, the lane for the exit ramp was bordered by a seam in the asphalt. The freeze/thaw had completely destroyed that seam the ENTIRE length of the exit ramp! Getting off the highway became a, "brace for impact" scenario in my car. You just take a line that hopefully gets you across the holes in the shortest distance you can safely cross the canyon that formed between the lanes.
Ugh, sounds horrible. There's a section of road by me like this... you have to crawl through it because there is no avoiding a hole.
Things seem worse this year. Went down 422 yesterday from 100 to Costco and amazed at the size and depth of some of the craters. I agree with a prior post that have to remember to occasionally check on traffic ahead since so focused on pothole avoidance. You know roads are bad when there is a facebook page, stickers and t-shirts for a crappy road.
The potholes are SLOWLY starting to get filled in... but not fast enough in my opinion.
Still a lot out there I have to remember on roads I drive on frequently.
