Re: Your thoughts on 15,000 mile oil changes..

Dunno, don't really pay attention to the mileage any more...solely go by the maintenance reminder or 12 months, whichever comes first although the newer cars track time as well. 2019 Corvette reached "time to change" while it was still in storage and on battery tender, nearly exactly 12 months after it's build date (Thanks GM Onstar for the e-mail ). Corvette, Cayman and the 2 Honda's...figure the guys who made the cars know best how to maintain them. The 2 Honda's only specify a filter change ever other oil change so those filters can go close to 20k miles.

Had a 1994 Ford Escort I bought new in 1994, gave it away after 250k miles; bet that thing went from about 150k miles to 250 k miles with maybe 4 oil changes; I think the gloopy oil (Mobil 1) inside was probably the only thing holding that motor together

5000mi, Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum synthetic. Dont care what the manual says or if the experts say I can go 10,000mi on oil.

15k seems like a really long time. My GTI says to change at 10K and I've owbed the car for about 6k miles and I did my oil change at 5k.

Is it okay at 10k? It might be, but it costs me $60 to change my oil and filter so it's just not a big deal.

Anymore, I strictly follow the oil life monitor. Our Honda Pilot seems to go about 10k miles before it goes off and my new GMC truck looks like it will go off at about 7.5k miles. But, if it wasn't there, I'd probably revert to 3k out of habbit.

Re: Your thoughts on 15,000 mile oil changes..

First, let me take some cover.

I bought a new Toyota Yaris back in 2008. Used to do oil changes at about 5-7,000 miles until i hit 10 years of ownership. That was my goal, to have the car at least 10 years.

After that, i regularly go 10,000 miles between changes. Though, I do try and shoot for 7-9,000. Still high. I know.

Been using mostly Mobil 1 from the start. Used Fram filters until I saw Mobil 1 filters at the Walmart where I get the oil.

I have had at least once gone to about 15,000 miles.

I'm very close to hitting 200,000 miles on the Yaris. No engine problems. Knocking on wood.

Still runs smooth. Still runs quiet. Still getting 32+ MPG.

edit: my thoughts, though? I wouldn't push for 15k on a regular basis. I'd still stick with shooting for 9k

Doing the change, myself, as I always do still costs me about $170 in material.

When I bought my porsche in 2006, oil change intervals were 20,000 miles and owners protested and porsche changed it to 10,000 miles or yearly. Mine got changed yearly because I never came close to that kind of mileage. Actually, I sold the car with 12,000 miles, 10 years later.

My parent's Toyota gets an oil change by me every 5,000 miles with Mobil1 5W-30
Stupid question: In the case of the Porsche you owned that the manufacturer recommended 20,000 oil change intervals, would that be an oil change you could do yourself? Or is that the kind of vehicle that required the oil change be done at the dealer? Is that even a mandatory thing on some vehicles?

I guess what I’m trying to get at is when dealing with a vehicle that recommends 20,000 mile intervals, could you walk into a normal auto parts store and find the filter you need? Or are those filters only available through the dealership and therefore part of the reason why most people wind up having the car serviced by them?

And in my experience, (over 33 years of marine/auto mechanics), No.

    You are not wrong.
I use to use Mobil1 or WIX filters, but after a ton of reading I switched to Fram Ultra Synthetic filters.
I haven't read anything negative about them only good reviews.
I change oil or get ready to get motivated to change it when I check my phone for the last oil change mileage. If I go a thousand over 3, I get more motivated to change it.
My cars don't make it to 5 without an oil change. I do a once a year for the winter sleeper in fall.

Lets talk "best oil" now. Pick any car forum and search out that question for a hoot n a half

Google up any YT vid where they cut open various filter brands......
It is no coincidence that man's best friend cannot talk.

No question from E2K is stupid. Yes, I did it myself. Backed it up on a pair of rhino ramps......that was the scary part.

It was a cartridge type filter which I bought at the dealership, but I've also purchased them at the major auto parts store under the brand name Mahle, an OEM manufacturer.

I also purchased Durametric software which allowed me to reset the service engine light.

Just had 4-year service done...I'll have to check and see the breakdown on the oil. I do know 6 spark plugs were $120...plus labor Your thoughts on 15,000 mile oil changes..
