Contest - Find my Newspaper to clean glass theory on MOL - win a prize

Contest - Find my Newspaper to clean glass theory on MOL - win a prize

On today's LIVE Detailing Class at 3:00pm we're going to do our best to answer as many MYTHS as possible submitted in this thread,

What are some common myths and misconceptions about car detailing?

Year's ago, when the discussion of using newspapers to clean glass came up on the MeguiarsOnline.com car detailing discussion forum came up, I was well aware of this "practice", but I had a DIFFERENT theory than everyone else.

Most people, at least back then, said the reason newspaper works so great for streak-free glass cleaning is due to the INK used for the print.

Not being a ink chemist, I have know idea if that's true?

I looked at this from a MUCH more practical frame of mine. After 3 brick-n-mortar detail shops and ALWAYS offering Mobile Detailing, my theory was that newspapers are a simply, an abundant and FREE sources of paper.

1: You have to buy paper towels.

2: You have to buy glass towels. (and then wash, dry and store them)

    Newspapers are FREE!

They can be found at any store, like 7-11 or Circle K, you can also get them for free at a recycle drop-off. And heck, lots of people subscribe to a paper and thus have inventory. It's a FREE resources. You don't have to wash, dry and store it. Use it and then throw it away.

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

Now the contest. This is NOT an article I wrote but simply a "reply" in a thread somewhere on the MOL forum. I've looked for it in the past to no avail.

If someone that's pretty good at searching Skynet, (Google), can locate the thread and the post #number - I will send you something cool from my garage and detailing class inventory.

NOTE: LIMITED TO THE LOWER 48 STATES

Sorry about the limit but it's not only a hassle to ship out of the U.S. but it also cost a lot more money.

    GO!

Here's a power searching tip for Skynet

After typing in your key words, add the below but without the spaces

    www. meguiarsonline .com

This tells Skynet to search that website instead of the entire Interweb.

Hahah, one can only hope, Mike and Autogeek are very generous to the forum community members.

Keep up the search, I remember Mike had us stumped not too long ago with a similar task and he was happy to give a little thank you gift to all who tried!

Yeah, pretty sure DMiglio got it right with that first link. It's the one I found and was going to post and noticed he already did.

To add on, you can use the "site:" directive on Google or duckduckgo or probably any other search engine out there.

"site:" will limit a search to a particular domain.

In this case enter something like this as your search:

site:meguiarsonline.com use newspaper to clean windows
This effectively gives you a "private" search engine for any public website that is open and indexed.

Nice trick/tip to narrow the searches, from on GT fan to another, thank you! That’ll be useful for future “Mike Missions!”

That's what I did and it gave me the post DMiglio posted. Last time he had one of these I won and all I did was to search it on Google just like that and it found what he (and I) wanted to find.

    Sorry guys,

I've been on an IDA conference call and then after that another meeting.

David you're the WINNER! Give me until tomorrow to get organized and I'll find something worthy and get it shipped to you. PM me your shipping address.

And just to note, I think of myself as being pretty good at searching for stuff via Google and yet I still didn't find these posts I was looking for,

This is the post I was thinking of - time stamp is Oct 27th, 2008, 11:59 AM

The newspaper recommendation is a method used and talked about but that doesn't make it a great way or even a good way to clean windows.

Newspapers are at their core paper - paper that tends to be clean and dry and for the most part abundant and free if you know where to look and even cheap to buy if you look at them as wiping cloths instead of information compared to paper towels.

It's completely possible that the entire "use newspaper to clean glass" recommendation came about because as an abundant, cheap/free source of clean, (not including the ink), dry paper towels of sorts, it could just be this is the accurate history behind why people use newspapers to clean and dry glass. Because newspaper is free and abundant, not because they're actually good at cleaning glass as compared to glass cleaning towels.

Does using newspapers to dry glass work? Yes. Is newspaper the best option for a wiping cloth? No. There are better wiping cloth options on the market even clean cotton towels work.

This is actually the original - time stamp = Sep 29th, 2008, 10:46 AM

Back then, just like today, in any discussion, if I have something already written then instead of re-thinking and re-typing I simply locate what I've already written and then copy and paste.

    Thanks David.

And for what it's worth - now everyone knows my theory about newspapers for cleaning glass.

And - it still makes sense to me.
