    Removing Clearcoat

    Ok, weird question...

My sister's husband asked if there's a way to remove clear coat without removing the paint underneath?
His van has clear failure but the color underneath seems ok?

Thought I'd ask here... other thought was to ask a bodyshop.

    Thx gang!

The only way that I know of, is to wet sand and that will also take some of the color coat off. I wouldn't say its impossible, but close to it.

That would be more of a hellish task than any re-paint.

I see what he might be thinking, as the spots where the CC failure are occurring will just peel right off, but where the CC is not failing, it is still a kind of monolithic unit. (Base coat/Clear coat).
It is no coincidence that man's best friend cannot talk.

    Re: Removing Clearcoat

if theres cc failure then the basecoat underneath isnt ok. if the plan was to just remove the clear, the basecoat will be wasted in no time. that basecoat needs clearcoat on top for protection.
removing the clear and adding more will be another recipe for disaster. the clear WILL peal off. id at least take it down to primer, spray a sealer, then base and clear.

I figured this wasn’t a good idea for him to do, but I told him I’d ask around.

I've seen this question asked before over the last 20 years in the online world and the answer is,

There's no simple, easy or fast way to remove "intact" clearcoat from the basecoat without making a big mess.

    Re: Removing Clearcoat

Soooooooo when did manufacturer's start clear topping paint? I thought it wasn't until 1980-ish?

Reason I ask was I looked at the van in question... looks to me like a single-stage paint. At most the metallic is the "topper" coat on it. It's from the 70's. Not sure of the exact year.

Regardless, the paint is not salvageable and it needs a ton of bodywork anyway...
