    New passport dilema

Younger son is 16, need new passport.

New passport Instructions say you need to show original birth certificate and provide photocopy with application.

But it say on birth certificate that it is illegal to make copy.

    What to do ?

Make a copy. They probably won’t arrest you as long as you haven’t removed the tag from your pillow or mattress. New passport dilema bring the original and a copy.

For both my Military and Civilian passports I submitted my original certificate and it was mailed back to me. Make a photocopy for personal records in case you need it during the three week turn around.

When we collect birth certificate in our Boy Scout Troop to travel to Canada, we require families to obtain certified copies. These are available from the registrar in the county of birth. As with everything, there is a fee, but it has been our solution to a similar problem.

And if you son will be travelling with an adult other than a parent, might I suggest having a notarized permission slip signed by both parents giving permission for the adult so that there can be no question about that adult's authority to take a minor over an international border?

A copy of a birth certificate is not good for much of anything except a record that somewhere there is an original. I used one issued from the hospital where I was born for passports and joining the military, then I went to get a new passport and they would not accept my original birth certificate because it did not have a raised seal, argh! So I had to contact the registrar of the state that issued the original birth certificate and get a new one at the age of 58 years old.

My dad just had to do this. Same exact thing. DOS said he needed the official one so he had to contact the county he was born in.

We made copies to keep in a safety deposit box while we sent the original to get a passport. Got the original back in 2 weeks.

Darn it. Going on a cruise July 10. I don't think I have enough time to renew son's passport. His old passport is still good and valid until October.

They say it is recommended for it to be valid for at least 6 months at date of travel. But its just a recommendation right ? not a requirement.

Will just renew son's passport after we get back.

    Re: New passport dilema

You can expedite a passport application if your traveling at a passport office. There is a few for this and it's walk in only. Technically if your crusing the only time you need the passport is if you get off the ship. You are always in the US if you stay on the ship. Additionally, copies are made at the post office where I renewed my kids passports.
