    ruptured achilles tendon ?

anyone have any experience with this type of injury ? working on a load of cull logs and some logs gave way. needless to say a few rolled over my legs and feet. went for an x-ray same day & nothing was broken. waited a week for swelling to go down & now it's obvious what the damage is. problem now is it's been 2 weeks & that tendon has definitely receded. plus I've got to wait another 2 weeks to see a foot & ankle specialist. the orthopedic doctor I spoke with today said there's a good chance at this point(because of the delay) they might not recommend surgery. He was probably taken my age into consideration & wanted to be nice about it. how can they tell how much or how far up the tare is ? anyone here go through this nightmare ?
    thanks, Carlo

you can see where the logs on the left rolled down. I guess I was lucky to not be standing in the front center. I don't think that would have ended well.

Sorry to hear about the accident Carlo. Those logs could have done a lot more damage. Usually they put you in a cast after the surgery.

As far as telling where the tear is and how bad it is a MRI would show the damage. I coached high school track and XC for several years and have been a runner for over 40 years and soft tissue injuries are tough to deal with; however, they can be overcome--no matter what your age.

thanks guys. I need to look at it like it could of been worse. I'd venture to say those logs are more than 5 or 6 hundred lbs. each. thankful no one else was standing in the line of fire. I've got this big ski boot type apparatus on my foot for now. it'll help me isolate my movement till I get in to see the specialist. I keep saying I'm going to retire, this may give me a shove in that direction. again thanks for the positive words.

You can treat that in a cast or surgically. Either is about the same after a year. In the beginning with surgery you can move and walk a little quicker.
We use a product from Arthrex called PARS. You can google it it’s pretty neat
It will take a year to get over it
    Best of luck

    Re: ruptured achilles tendon ?

Sorry to hear about your injury. I’ve done it myself in May this year (playing soccer) and it was a complete rupture. I went through the surgery, was put in the cast for about a month and walking boot for another two months or so. I was out of the boot by July and done with the therapy early August. Back to the gym late August and by now i’m probably 95% back to where i was before the injury - running, weights lifting and everything else is back. Google Thompson test, do it and it will tell you whether it is a full rupture or partial. The key with this injury is patience and taking it really easy day by day...
Cheer up and best of luck. PM if you have any questions or looking for some details. I totally feel you and would be more than happy to help. Cheers
