Marine 31 Wool Pads in ACTION! Heavy Cut Cleaner Wax vs. Boston Whaler

Earlier this year we teamed up with Buff & Shine with the intention of coming out with a line of wool buffing and polishing pads for the Marine 31 line. After a lot of testing with the various compounds and polishes in the Marine 31 line, we're very pleased to introduce a line of wool pads with the Marine 31 name on them.

Marine 31 Wool Pads are available in 6.5 and 7.5 inch sizes in the following configurations:

4 Ply 100% Twisted Wool Compounding Pad
Each strand of high grade wool is tightly twisted to maintain a consistent level of cut for longer periods of operation. The thick yarns remove heavy oxidation and stains from neglected or never-before-polished metal surfaces. The pad feature over 1 inch long threads. This pad was developed for gel coat but is also very effective on aluminum and stainless steel as well. Available in 6.5 and 7.5 inches.

    50/50 Wool Acrylic Polishing Pad
This wool pad has 50% 4 ply wool and 50% single strand wool/acrylic blend. This combination makes a light compounding/polishing wool that removes minor oxidation, haze, dullness, and spots. The 50/50 pad has 1 ˝ inch twisted threads, which are less aggressive than the shorter twisted threads found on the compounding pad. Available in 6.5 and 7.5 inches.

    Electrified Sheepskin Final Polishing Pad
The Electrified Sheepskin Final Polishing Pad is made by electrifying the wool to remove microscopic barbs naturally found in wool. The resulting wool is soft enough for final polishing with a shine enhancing polish. This wool pad has 1 inch threads. Available in 7.5 inch size.

Last week Bob McKee, the owner and founder of Marine 31, picked up an 18 foot Boston Whaler. It was in rough shape, to say the least.

Andre Hile, one of our product specialists took on the job of restoring the finish to a level of gloss and clarity fitting for the owner of a line of marine waxes, compounds and polishes. Andre did an outstanding job.

Detailing a boat can be a lot of work, and Andre values his weekends so his ultimate goal was to remove the oxidation and restore the clarity in one step. Oh, and he didn't want to perform an additional step applying wax. The product that does all of the above is Marine 31 Gel Coat Heavy Cut Cleaner Wax. Andre applied it using a FLEX XC3401 and a 6.5 inch Marine 31 50/50 Wool Acrylic Polishing Pad. The FLEX is a great choice for boat detailing because it doesn't instill holograms but it's also powerful enough to cut through oxidation.

Always use a Wool Pad Spur when starting out with a new wool pad. You also want to spur the pad after each section to clean and fluff up the fibers.

When compounding a boat it's important to use the compound or polish of your choice "wet." Gel coat is very porous and it absorbs the product rather quickly. You also want to ensure you have plenty of lubrication so the pad and compound can work as intended.

Here Andre is applying at least 30-40 pounds of pressure.

Check out the before and after once we removed the tape line:

Stay tuned for the complete write up.

Awesome! I love that you can correct gel coat with a wool buffing pad + Flex 3401 w/o having to purchase a rotary. Makes me want to try correcting the gel coat on my brothers boat!

Glad to see Andre finally earning his keep too
