Learn to machine sand TODAY! LIVE Detailing Class at 3:00pm Eastern Time

Learn to machine sand TODAY! LIVE Detailing Class at 3:00pm Eastern Time

Now that this is over, here's the YouTube version...

At 3:00pm today, Yancy and I will be going over a plethora of topics that are hard to find good information about let along video showing how it's done.

The car was here for our February 3-day class. It's a 1963 Plymouth Fury Drag Car. This car was recently repainted. There were some flaws UNDER the clear on the trunk lid so it went back and was repainted.

After painting, it was hand sanded and buffed. Now there is overspray over the entire car. There's residual sanding marks in the paint. There's holograms everywhere the fresh paint was buffed. No big deal, this is the norm for the body shop industry.

    Turning lemons into lemonade

After seeing the results from the paintwork, I told Carlos to bring her back and I would personally fix the entire car. I also asked if it would be okay to use this project for one of our LIVE detailing classes and in his normal awesome self - he said no problemo.

Here's the car after my 3-day class completely hand sanded and then machine sanded the entire car. (I teach wetsanding in all my classes)

    From this recent class...

Pictures and Comments: 2021 February 3-Day Detailing Bootcamp Class

1963 Plymouth Fury Drag Car - Brand new basecoat/clearcoat paint job

And although the trunk lid left looking like this,

It don't look like the above any longer.

    Where to go to watch?

At 3:00pm today - head over to either the Autogeek YouTube Channel or the Autogeek Facebook page and see how it's done.

How timely given my very recent review of a few wet-sanding products, albeit they were hand sanding variants.

    I'll be tuning in.

In the past I have always done my final wet-sanding by hand as I feel that is how you have the best control. But something you brought up and I read (can't remember exactly where) regarding machine sanding caught my attention. That is... that you like to do the initial 1500G sanding by hand and then follow that with 3000G-5000G machine sanding. I like that methodology and look forward to trying it at some point.

Apologies I can't share this on YouTube and then quickly and easily insert the video for you to watch on the forum. BUT - here's two videos I just took of this car on my Facebook page.

Click the link if you want to see how bad the paint is and also a rundown of all the tools, products and pads we'll be showing.

Thanks for watching John. I was nervous knowing a "real" body and paint guy was going to be watching.

If I were not doing this on camera live I would be more exact in everything I did but when doing it live on camera you have to be sensitive to the time issue and also try to stay out of the way of the camera view.

I'll take pictures when I'm all done, she's going to come out real nice.

Mike Phillips nervous? I don't believe you LOL

    I get the camera thing.

This is the second or third one of these Thursday deals I watched. I don't always have the time... but being retired is certainly a benefit. I like to say that there are only a very few benefits to getting older, and being retired is definitely one of them.

Re: Learn to machine sand TODAY! LIVE Detailing Class at 3:00pm Eastern Time

    Hey Mike,

I hope you look at this thread again so you see this.

I just spent the afternoon cleaning one of my bikes and my truck (waterless). While I was in my garage doing that something from today's broadcast came to mind...

Early on you did some paint thickness measurements. At the end it must have slipped your mind and you didn't take any after measurements.

If you could follow up with that I think it could help many here. I read so many threads of those who are understandably a little timid when it comes to polishing... All the chatter about how thin paint is can be a double edged sword. On one hand it is very true. On the other, it can be a scary, intimidating, and limiting factor for some. What they don't realize is how little paint is actually removed during a typical polishing session, especially when you are working on factory baked finishes.

I'm not sure what the accuracy/resolution of the gauge you used is, but I'd bet that your after readings today, if you had taken them, would be negligible if determinable at all. My guess would be in the one to two tenths of a mil range; and possibly so little change that you couldn't positively identify the change with your gauge.

Even if the change turned out to be somewhat greater than my guestimate, given all the steps, i.e., sanding, compounding with wool and a rotary, then polishing, on a fairly fresh paint job, it could still calm some nerves and put some context to the "paint is thin" mantra.

Then again, maybe due to the paint being so fresh you may have removed a bit more than I surmise, and that could blow a huge hole in my thought process here, but it would be interesting to see the measurement results nevertheless.
