Detailing Class - Frequently Asked Questions

Detailing Class - Frequently Asked Questions

What time do the Saturday and Sunday classes start?
    • Classes start at 9:00am
    • From 8:00am to 9:00 you have time to,
    • Arrive
    • Park your car
    • Stretch your legs
    • Use the powder room
    • Meet and greet fellow forum members
    • Check out the rides
    • Check out our training facilities
    • And enjoy some hot coffee and fresh donuts

The door to the classroom shuts at 9:00 sharp so please respect everyone’s time and arrive before 9:00am and have some fun, maybe do some networking before the class starts.

What time does the class end?
The garage portion of the class officially ends at 4:00pm

    What’s covered in the class?

    Detailing 101
The basics of working by hand, that is how to correctly clay, work a hand applied compound or paint cleaner to remove swirls and scratches, how to apply a hand polish, how to apply a wax or paint sealant.

How to use a Dual Action Polishers – Griot’s, Meguiar’s, Porter Cable, Flex 3401

    Detailing 102
How to wet-sand by hand, how to wet-sand with an Air-Powered DA Sander. How to use a rotary buffer to remove your sanding marks, how to use a rotary buffer to bring the finish to a high gloss, how to use a DA Polisher to insure there are no swirls.

Can I work on my own car?
For both classes we will have a rental car to practice on in most cases. We’ll do our best to have a black, swirled-out rental car. At the end of the class on both Saturday and Sunday, (after 3:00pm), if there’s time and room then the Instructor is usually very willing to let people work on their car, we just have to play it by ear. Our "Open Garage" classes are dedicated for working on your own car, not the Saturday classes primarily due to time constraints.

Can I buy products at the class?
On Saturday, if time allows for staff to pull orders then you can get your product that day, if not your order will be shipped first thing Monday morning.

Will I get a refund if I cancel at least 24 hours before the class date?
If you notify us within 24 hours of the class you will get a refund.

Will I get a refund if I don’t show up?
If you notify us within 24 hours of the class you will get a refund.

    Can I come late?
No. If you can’t make the class on time it’s really better to pick a date when your schedule is clear and attend on that date.

    Can I leave early?
Yes, but it’s better if you clear your schedule and attend on a date where you can attend the entire class.

Can I skip the Saturday class since I’m already a world famous Detailer?
    No.

    Will I get a certificate?
    Yes.

Do I need to bring a lunch?
Yes or you can visit one of the nearby fast food places like Subway, Wendy's, MacDonalds, etc.

Do I need to bring my own chemicals?
No. We will provide all tools and chemicals

    Can I take pictures?
    Yes.

    Can I take videos?
No. Violators will be put to death live on the Internet and all their earthy belongings sold on eBay.

    Can I bring a friend?
    If they,
    1. Register with the forum
    2. Reply to the sign-up thread
    3. Reserve their space with the registration fee.

Can I bring my Dad, Mother, Brother, Cousin or Uncle?
    If they,
    1. Register with the forum
    2. Reply to the sign-up thread
    3. Reserve their space with the registration fee.
    I don’t have a computer?

Perhaps we can convince Autogeek to have a "Mike Phillips Traveling Road Show of Sensational Detailing" where he can come to parts of the country where there are a lot of us Auto Geeks and show us the way to "Awesome Detailing and Fun."

    Don

P.S. There are a lot of us in New England.

P.S. There are a lot of us in New England.

Out of all the aspects of my job, one of my favorite jobs is the "Roadshow Class". I've done a number of them for Meguiar's and they were very popular but they also cost around $1000.00 to $1500.00 per class...

There's plane tickets, hotel, rental car expenses, meals plus any expense related to the class...

It also means having all the products, pads, microfibers and tools needed for the class, these items have to be packed and shipped to the location and then packed and shipped home...

    The location needs,

    • Electricity
    • In a perfect world an air compressor with at least 90 PSIG
    • Good lighting
    • A place to work on cars out of the sun
    • If there's sanding, then a place you with a floor you can get wet
    • Bathrooms
    • Parking for 20 to 30 cars
    • A facility that can hold 20 to 50 people depending upon how large the class gets
    • Drinking water
    • Food or access to food, like near by fast food... If food is supplied that's an expense
    • Coffee capability or not, everyone can figure that out before they arrive
    • Chairs
    • Usually there's a power point presentation where knowledge is transferred so a wall or a screen and a projector. This usually has to be shipped too...
And that list is just off the top of my head...

Been there done that, know what it takes to do a professional job not just a GTG in some guy's garage... nothing wrong with GTG's but an actual structured class is at a much higher level that a GTG. I've done both, enjoy both but huge difference between the two and the costs difference between the two...

Because a successful business makes money, not just covers costs, and the goal is always a Win/Win deal for everyone, do the math and that's why there's no road show classes, it costs more to put one on than historically people are willing to pay.

A good ballpark figure to make this happen would be $3000.00, if you open the class to 30 people that's $100.00 a person.
