I would like to respectively add that I mark my backing plates on two sides (180 degrees from each other).
I find this to be even easier to monitor.

I also add more than 1 mark. My OCD does not like the lack of symmetry when adding just one line.

That's how I started out doing, it. I would place 4 marks on the backing plate and the pad.

The above is from a "reply" I posted to MeguiarsOnline.com back in May of 2009.
Back then, the idea of marking your backing plate or marking your pads was a "new" idea.
BUT - also LOOK at how THICK the Meguiar's foam pad was back then? We didn't get THIN pads until Lake Country introduced their thin Hydro-Tech foam pads back in September of 2010.
Here's my article on that and you can see the time stamp of the first post in the thread.
Thin is in...
Hard to believe that while the first foam pad was introduced in 1965 it took 54 years to get to thin pads.
