Iron X marring/etching painted alloy wheels.
I have used the IronX gel mostly, but decided to try the spray instead. Sprayed as directed. Let it dwell for few minutes. No colour change so rinsed and inspect. The clearcoat was completely etched. Now this bottle of IronX is probably 3 years old, so maybe that affected the product, but I have used the gell numerous times on this clear coat with no problems. I used Meg's Ultimate Compound to partially remove, but why? Should I pitch the spray? BTW the barrels were unaffected?

Reason: Should have mentioned run coated with Wolfgang Metalwerks Concourse Sealant.

Did you shake it well? Did it freeze over the 3 years you have had it?

Did you use it out in the sun?

I shook it well, it was in the garage but don't think it froze and the wheels were 60F. The wheel was sealed with Wolfgang Metallwerks and I think that might be what the IronX reacted with. I tried it on another wheel (barrel only) and seemed to work fine (not as good as the gel). I'll be pulling the affected wheel in next couple weeks and test again on the barrels (it's my full size spare and I use it frequently to test products). The spare is painted in sections and bare aluminum in other sections, so good tester.

Iron X is not really a wheel cleaner it's a iron fallout remover.
Buy something made for wheels like Dodo Juice Furrois Dueler. Also Never use stuff 3 years old.

Iron X Iron Remover, CQuartz IronX, Paint Cleaner, paint decontamination - "Iron X is highly recommended for all clear coated alloy wheels."
Maybe age was a factor; maybe not. I'd contact the manufacturer if I had doubts about an older product. I have some bottles from Menzerna that are considerably older than three years, and the products work fine. We aren't talking about dairy products.

Tried on the barrel of second wheel and no problems. Conclusion it was reacting to the Wolfgang Metallwerks Sealant (just for S&G I put some IronX gel on the first one and no problems).

That's worth passing on to the AG staff. Glad you figured it out.
