There are two main reasons why we engineers say gear drives are "positively driven" :
1. There is no slip between gears in the transmission of power. Whereas belt drives, for example, are not "positive" as there is slip.
2. Gear drives are also "positive drives" as the ratio between the driver and driven remains the same.
