White Clay - Red Overspray Paint
One reason I like light and white colored detailing clay is because it makes it easier to see the true color of the contamination you're removing off of a car.
Example
Last week we detailed a 1950 Ford Kustom. After doing a waterless wash the next step was to feel the paint using the Baggie Test. The Baggie Test revealed the paint to have some type of bonded contaminants. Before turning the team loose using clay towels and clay mitts, I clayed a section of paint on the hood and then the front passenger side window.
Here's the results from claying the paint on the passenger's side hood.

And it's easy to understand that if there is some form of contaminant floating around in the air, when it lands it doesn't care what it lands on. Most people feel and inspect the paint. But if you find some kind of contaminant on the paint, chances are very good the same rough feel will also be on the glass, headlights, trim, wheels, etc.
You can clay or use a clay towel or clay mitt on any surface that is smooth and hard. Don't use clay or clay substitutes on surfaces with a rough texture, matte paint or matte graphics.
