Pro Tip - Wet Towel instead of tape

Pro Tip - Wet Towel instead of tape

When I’m working on someone else’s expensive muscle car and I don’t know or trust the quality of paint - I read of taping-off the fresh air grill I’ll get a couple microfiber towels wet with water, ring them out and then place them over the grills.

Because they are wet they have WEIGHT and won’t blow off from the air current caused by a spinning buffing pad.

I prevent any compound or polish splatter dots from getting into a place I cannot remove them from while avoiding the risk of pulling paint off the grill when removing painters tape.

Below is a close-up of the area BELOW the fresh air grill.

Did the same thing for this old 2-door Ford.

By the way - Cordless FLEX PE14 works great for glass polishing.

    Great tip Mike.

This would’ve been handy for me a couple of weeks ago when I was buffing out a Dodge Challenger that had Carbon Fibre looking stripes. Instead I taped the edges with tape & then taped some towels down one edge onto the tape line .... damp towels would’ve been easier ....

I know for next time now.

Read the thread title while quickly scrolling and thought I’d read “Wet Towel instead of hope.” Also quite fitting as you’ll be hoping you don’t snag the towel in the polisher and hope you won’t be pulling up any paint from using tape.

This is a really good tip and I don’t think I’ve ever seen this recommended before, this is why you’re the best in the business!!

Great tip Mike. You need to put together a book of detailing tips and tricks to go together with your other books. Probably would be a best seller (I get 1%, lol).
