Re: Ceramiclear Paints - Be Careful

Is this similar to the paint (scratch resistant) that Infiniti used a few years ago? This paint was giving detailers nightmares. They nicknamed it "sticky paint".

Yes, it was supposed to be the next best thing to sliced bread and it turned out to be a horrible mistake. Here's a thread here about it..

I like buffing on PPG paints, in fact all the hoods and trunk lids I have here at Autogeek are sprayed with PPG paints and at least with the clear being used I've been able to polish out hologram free using only a rotary buffer.

The idea behind the Ceramiclear paint system is a good idea... it's just the layer is too THIN to be practical.

So this is just a heads-up for anyone detailing cars, whether you do it for money or fun...

Great article Mike and these types of tips can save us paint polishers a lot of grief, not to mention the client.

This would be excellent information to have.

You're safe Mark. You're car just has a hard a** high solid clear coat. Ceramics are mostly on VW/Audi, Mercedes, etc. Those European cars.

While this IS bad news for the detailing community there is still some good that can come out of it. I know for sure now with this new information, I will inform my customers of possible issues pertaining to heavy paint correction with a high recommendation of using a paint coating to offset the removal of the upper ceramic layer.

    Good thinking...

It should be a wake-up call to any dealerships selling and thus performing the dealer installed swirl option to get with the program, educate your staff and equip them with the appropriate tools to detail cars right the first time.
