I think it's hard to go wrong with a Lake Country backing plate and the Thin Pro pads available here at Autogeek. I'd get orange and white pads, that covers a decent range of defects. Make sure you get plenty of pads, like 4 to 6 of each color.

For compound I really like Griot's Fast Correcting Cream, super easy to use. For less cut, Wolfgang makes great stuff, Total Swirl Remover and Finishing Glaze are both really nice.

Lake country pads are great as Bruno said. They are my go-to pads for all of my needs. And the Griot's Creams are top-notch.

But, if you want to keep things as simple as possible, you could use the Boss creams with the Boss pads. Each bottle is color-coded to the pad to be used to eliminate the guesswork.

I use Lake Country pads and they are great. I have also used Rupes Pads and they work well. Griots makes a nice glass polishing pad.
