Re: Griot's Garage 6 Gen 2 DA accident

I too have a Gen 2 GG DA and got a bit concerned when I saw this thread. Took mine apart but could see no visible sign of impending failure, however I did write GG expressing my concern and got a response immediately. FWIW to anyone who is worried like I was, here's their response:

    "Hello David,

Thank you for taking the time to email us here at Griot's Garage. This is not a normal occurrence and not something our department was aware of. When using the Random Orbital, you will want to make sure that the bolt for the backing plate is completely tightened before use. Another factor as that when the unit is turned on, you will want to ensure that the pad is flush to the surface in which you are working with as this will also prevent over spray from occurring.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to reply to this email or call our Customer Service Department at (800) 345-5789 6:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. PST Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

Thank you again for your e-mail, and have a great day!

    Have fun in your garage!"
    Dave

    oakview,
I wouldn't worry about this issue because if something happens, rest assured GG will take care of it. the reason for the shaft breaking off would be running it on speed 6 for a lengthy time and/or the pad is not flat on the surface and spinning too freely in the air. while there may be variables from user to user, these would be the reasons why it would happen...

I have NEVER used speed 6, ever since I melted a BuffnShine green pad backing. I rarely use speed 5, I usely use 4

    I have a first generation Griot's Polisher.

Forum member gave it to me a few years ago. Once in a while someone that still owns one will join the forum asking for help using it so I've kept it just for reference purposes.

I don't see how anyone could use this polisher on speed 6, anything over 4-4.5 and the vibration is just too intense, I start to get numbness in my hands and wrist.

I'm ready for a new silky smooth long throw polisher
