Need Help in Purchase of Polisher

    Hello everyone,
I am looking at replacing my Milwaukee 2800 rpm hi-speed polisher I have been using for many years. Yes I am old school as I have been detailing since the late 70's. I have learned a lot from various teachers or should I say wholesalers who did it in order to sell their cars. I have run a production shop and over the years as the paint finishes have changed so have I but I feel I would like to purchase a new polisher? Saying all of this I would like to get some information and referral's as to what machine would be a good one? I am now doing antique and exotic cars for a broker and well like always it is good to update your equipment . . . All of your advice is appreciated. .

Looking at going to a random orbital or staying with a rotary?

Well, I have seen the PORTER-CABLE 7424XP 6-Inch Variable-Speed Polisher and thought it might be something that might do it as I have ready many testimonials' about it and not to much bad about it. This is what I may be looking at?

in your case since you're use to a high speed/rotary, i would suggest a flex 3401 (forced rotation which means it will keep rotation no matter how much pressure is applied). it's like the best of both (high speed/rotary & DA) worlds...

I agree. This is a great choice for someone used to a rotary. I think the Porter Cable would not be powerful enough for him.

Being used to the power of a rotary you may want to pick up the Flex 3401. This DA will spin even if you sit on it.

Flex is what I started out with as my first and only polisher. You can start with the PC ofcourse, but over time you will want more out of the machine you choose.

I went with the flex because I wanted to spend once, and get the best without thinking "damn I wish I had more correction ability".

And as the pro's above said - you have used a rotary, so the flex would be your best bet.

    Good luck

Flex 3401. If you're doing volume work you would benefit from its power and ability to take a serious thrashing and keep on working. The Porter Cable is a lot of people's first paint polisher (when they aren't skilled on a rotary like you are). It does the job but takes much longer.
