The current production Flex3401 model design has been around for about 4-5 years. I suspect that the newer model, whenever it comes out will allow for different backing plate sizes.

the only difference from when they first came out and now, is the size of the backing plate offered with it. IIRC, when they first came out the backing plate was 6" (had the red velcro on the bottom) and now they come with a 5.5". other than that everything else is the same...
