    HD Speed on gel coat?

Has anyone ever used HD Speed on gel coat before? If so, how did it perform? Good results? What type of pad and tool did you use?

Any feedback is always appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think it would work great for very light oxidation or for new boats with simple things like scum stains after being in the water.

For "cutting" out "deep" oxidation, it would be a Band-Aid approach but you could try.

The worse the oxidation the more power you need, most powerful tool/pad combo is rotary with wool pad.

Next would be FLEX 3401 with wool pad

Next would be FLEX 3401 with foam cutting pad

Next would be either Mille or Makita PO5000c with either fiber or foam pad

Next would be any free spinning orbital with aggressive fiber or foam pad

Thanks for the reply Mike! The reason for asking this question is I’m going to wash and wax my dad’s friend’s boat this weekend if the weather permits. I don’t think it has a lot of oxidation. So I was wondering if hd speed would be a good candidate. I have the Meg’s MT 300 polisher with foam cutting and polishing pads. So I’m hoping this will be enough to spruce it up.

Only if it's in really good shape. I tried it on my boat and it didn't do very well. That's because I had mild oxidation and it was not aggressive enough to clean it up.

The Speed certainly won't hurt anything.

IMO, do a test spot before you start the actual job. Gel coat is a different animal than paint. Sometimes, GC will look amazing after polishing/waxing. But if it is too oxidized, the next day all that shine is gone.
It is no coincidence that man's best friend cannot talk.

    What pad/machine did you use?

Re: HD Speed on gel coat?

I tried it on my Waverunner, part of which is black, so that section shows everything. I found it cut well, but it did not finish great. The finish was "foggy," even with a finishing pad. I ended up using a wax application pad (very soft) LC pad to get it to finish decently. Never had this problem with clearcoat, gelcoat is indeed a different animal. I was using a Flex 3401.

Mike says Gelcoat don't like soft pads when abrading.

What about hd speed with a uro 50/50 pad? You think that would provide for cut?
