    Talking Shop Lighting

    I am going to be building a new shop for detailing. It will be 32W By 48L with 11'4"ceilings. I am looking for suggestions on lighting for the ceiling. Ceiling and walls will be white tin. I am thinking of using the T5, High Bay lighting fixtures. What do you guys have for lighting?

    overhead i have three banks of side by side dual 4' bulb T8 fixtures in 5000k. i believe they are all 32 watt. this is for essentially one bay.

    i got a killer deal on them - they are commercial grade fixtures. plus T8 are cheaper than T5. not as efficient but given the bulb cost difference, i don't think it matters.

    Check out this site. Lights are pricey but it sounds like do it once and be done.

    I spent some time at SEMA checking out these lights. I think they would be great for a large building and will probably try one out in my shop (32W x 56D x 14H). They really lit up the convention center!

    If the ceiling is over 11 feet, is there an advantage to hanging the lights lower?

    Is the entry door to the garage also 11' 4" ?

    The entry door will be 9' tall. I wanted to leave enough room to put light fixtures over the door.

    Has anyone used our bought one of these "big ass light" fixtures? I put one link up on here, but look them up on YouTube. They are expensive but they look awesome. Home Depot carries them.

    CRI is specd at "70+"... that's unacceptable in a $400 lamp. For half the price of one BAL fixture I can outfit my entire two-car garage with new T8 fixtures and Philips 5000K fluorescent bulbs with a CRI of 82.

    I just started looking at lighting for my garage that I can install this spring. Based on that response I have a lot more research to do since I'm not familiar with those terms.

    Re: Shop Lighting

    CRI="Color Rendering Index"

    To put it very simply, it's a value assigned to a light source of its ability to reflect the true colors off surfaces as compared to an ideal light source. Modern fluorescents are capable of CRI over 80, which is very good -- and fine for our needs as auto detailers.
