Would this bodge work? Adapting my backing pad.

Sadly the German dealer jacked the price of the 5” Makita backing pad from £41 to £79 after recieving my money
and having heard nothing from Makita UK for 3 weeks since requesting they start selling the 5” Variety I am trying to make the use of the 6” 3M Pads on the Makita 6” backing pad.

As a newbie, could use some expertise.

    The issues are
    1. mainly Protecting the car from the Makita backing pad, the hook system is very aggressive, and the edge if the BP is hard plastic ... so a collision would not be good.
    2. The 3M Pad’s Velcro has a 10mm gap all the way around.
so using a DA I am concerned the hook system on the Makita BP would grind away at the unprotected foam on that 10mm rim of the polishing pad.
Question is would it destroy the edge of the pad?

I may risk wrecking one pad, just to complete the car (being done panel by panel, one per day outside) until I can resolve a source for the 5” Makita BP.

    3. I bought a 3M 6” Interface pad, which has a less aggressive hook system, and it raises the Polishing pad 10mm more away from the hard plastic Makita BP. So thats a positive step.
    - This has the same issue of the hook velcro being up against that 10mm rim of foam on the Polishing pad, but a less agressive hook type.
    - Question : Should I manually cut the Interface pad at 45 degrees to “hide” the edge of the rough hook material to protect the car? And possibly reduce the wear in the foam of the polishing pad i.e. less exposed raw velcro.
    - Assuming this manual attempt will be a bit uneven would that matter? Or just leave it as is and just use the 6” pad on big flat areas ... carefully.

Note I am not compounding or polishing, just jewelling the panels. So no pressure required.

    4. The Makita BP has holes in it ... I assume for cooling.
But they do not line up with the holes on the Interface pad.
Does this matter? As at least the Interface pad would get cooled I assume? And the ‘friction surface’ i.e pad to panel is distanced 10mm more .
Note the outside temp here is 15C so reasonably cool.
Or is this really a non issue?

    5. Another option would be to buy a Flexipads 5” Interface pad, to partially avoid the rim issue. But it would still be there, and so I discounted the idea as the gap of 10mm between the soft under foam side of the Polishing pad and the Makita BP may well cause faster wear on the foam, as it flaps up and down?

    Any ideas welcome.

If I cant get the 5” Makita BP, coukd this work long term? As I do have a 3” Flex BP that works fine with the 3” 3M polishing pad for small or curvy areas?

Not ideal but I doubt I would polish or jewel more than once a year.
