Re: Mild degreaser for cleaning wheels
why not use a wheel specific cleaner? in the long run you wouldn't want to damage the wheels. this is inexpensive (dilutable) and you can use it on tires too...
Meguiars Non-Acid Wheel and Tire Cleaner D-14301
Meguiars Non-Acid Wheel & Tire Cleaner is a professional-grade wheel and tire cleaner that forgoes caustic acids and instead relies on smart chemistry. Designed to clean clear coated, factory painted and chrome wheels, Meguiars Non-Acid Wheel & Tire Cleaner enables you to save time and maximize profits by relying on one wheel cleaner for most applications. Like the name implies, Meguiars Non-Acid Wheel & Tire Cleaner removes dirt and grime from tires as well. Now that’s what we call a great value!

I second the Megs D-143, cheap and even cheaper when you dilute it 1:2 or more.

Re: Mild degreaser for cleaning wheels
while D-143 is certainly an effective degreaser alternative to wheel acid, but not my first choice on powder coated wheels. If you are interested in a mild degreaser that you can use to effectively cleans wheels, tires, wheel wells, paint, etc. Optimum Power Clean diluted anywhere from 3:1 to 7:1 depending on how maintain the wheels are is a really effective and relatively mild degreaser. Another great cleaner that is mild enough to safely use on every surface of a vehicle and is nice because you don't need to wear gloves to use is Nexzett 1z Blitz APC. I dilute it 30:1.

Slightly off-topic: there's seem to be a phobia with acid-based wheel cleaners. What am I missing? I don't get why putting an acid on your wheels in necessarily any worse than a base. Either one in sufficient strength will cause damage and either one needs to be rinsed off. Is there a known issue with acid-based cleaners?

Re: Mild degreaser for cleaning wheels
A mild citrus based APC would work probably, but I would look into a dedicated wheel cleaner myself. I have some D-143 on the way caught it on sale. Currently my primary wheel cleaner is Sonax Wheel Cleaner Plus.

I use:
303 Marine Citrus Cleaner & Degreaser
It has a pH of 7-8...which, in
some circles, is considered to
be a mild degreaser.
