From my understanding a 2 step is Polish and Wax.

If your gong to do a 2 step, why not reduce it to a 1 step?

i would try the Menzerna FG-400, and wax (SON1C) or sealant over top (GTechniq C2v3 Liquid Crystal)

    Re: need help picking compound/polish

Being you don't want to spend a lot but want good results then buy yourself a bottle of Meguair's Ultimate Compound, works very well, easy to work it, wipes off easy.
It's a compound that many people including myself that got great results even on the worst paints.
An orange pad should work in removing those swirls you talked about.

Then follow up using Meguiar's 205 Ultra Fine Polish using a white pad.

IMO you'll be happy with the results

Being a black toyota I would expect haze with a heavy cut compound and or MF pads. So if you get haze expect to need a polish as well.
