what DA backing plates with OPT MF pads?

i've always used ~5", 3.5" and a trimmed 3.5" (down to 3") backing plates for my DA.

this is because i've always used 5.5" and 4" foam pads.

so which of the backing plates that i have do i use for the various OPT MF pads?

the sizes listed are 3.25", 4.25" and 5.25".

i assume i can use my trimmed small backing plate for the 3.25" pads and the 5.25" pads with my 5" plate (which is really 4.75").

I use a 5" Meg's backing plate with my Opt cutting and polishing 5.25" MF pads, and it's worked fine for me. Can't answer definitively on the 3.25" pads though since I don't have any, but I imagine your trimmed down 3" plate is the right way to go.

I used a 5" LC bp with the OPT mf pads and it works great!

On the 3401, I use the factory flex plates and the LC kit with no problems except the heat build up in the center. I think a screw cover that kept the center at the same height as the rest of the pad would help.

I like the Optimum plates best for sure on traditional and rotary though...I don't have a Rupes yet.

I think it's more important to remember to change or clean them often than which plate you use. Knowing that microfiber cuts fast and holds on to debris, it's very important to work clean for best results. If you find yourself wondering if you should switch the pad for a clean one...then you should just go ahead and switch it.

good info. i will definitely keep that in mind since i've only worked with foam and wooled foam prior.
