wheel stain removal - splotchy milk like stains

    Hello,

I have a 4th gen fbody and I am thinking about picking up a set of C5 thin spokes off a facebook market place seller. They are cheap, likely for this reason.. From my research this is polished aluminum that is clear coated? Looks like someone used a powerful wheel cleaner of some sort, sprayed on and forgot about it and didn't wash it off. The guy said he used turtlewax chrome polish and couldn't remove it. Think I could hit it with a compound or polish and remove this? I have a DA which could maybe hit the face. And I could buy a mothers powerball or something similiar for the rest. The strongest compound I have is megs ultimate compound. Or is this going to require a full strip and re-clear? Has anyone had experience removing damage like this? I have not bought them yet.

If it’s clear coated then whatever’s on their may have eaten through the clear. If that’s what happened probably can’t be fixed. Polished to metal and re-clear. Not sure.

Unless their super cheap i’d either pass or get them and mess with it but be OK with plasti dipping them.

If it's on a car that doesn't see too many miles, just get them and strip the clear.

    •IMO:
-If the price is right: snatch ‘em up.

    -Next: make an appointment with
    the nearest Powdercoating facility
or mobile unit. (Let them do all the
    “refinishing” to your preferences.)

^^^Bob hit this one on the head!

And I think they are chrome. It does indeed look like a powerful chemical was used and 'hurt' the finish.

Like-new, used examples of these wheels (5102 front, 5104 rear) bring $300-350 ea.

    FWIW...

•Although there were some Dealerships and
Vendors that had some OEM C5 wheels sent
out to be chromed for The Aftermarket...

-There were no OEM chromed wheel options
for C5s. Here are the C5s’ wheel options:

    •Wagon Wheel (5 Spoke):
    -Painted

    •Thin (5 Spoke):
    -Painted: Silver; Yellow
    -“Gold” Magnesium
    -Polished

    •ZO6 (10 Spoke):
    -Painted
    -Polished

    Mrs. FUNX650 likes these non-OEM
(aftermarket) chrome wheels on her C5:
