    Using D/A to Rotary Adapter

    Hi everyone,

Hobbyist detailer here. I have been trying to find a way to polish some of the smaller faces / panels / areas on my car using my DA polisher. I bought a DA to Rotary adapter so that I could use 2" pads on my DA (I seemed to find 2" backing plates only in rotary format). It seems to 'work', in that the pad spins and seems to have some wiggle to the movement the way a normal DA larger pad would, but the pad seems to get pretty hot pretty quickly. Haven't actually used it on the vehicle yet. Anyone have any concerns about using a setup like this on occasion? I assume perhaps run it at a lower speed than when using a 5-6" pad?

    Appreciate any help!

    Thanks,

    HAMBO

What throw is your DA? Myself, I probably wouldn't use an adapter on a long throw, but have used one fairly regularly (lately) with 3" backing plate on an 8mm throw DA. No issues.

    Haven't tried a 2"

I believe it's a 15mm throw. I have used it with a 3" pad before and had no issues, but without an adapter.

Maybe the 2" is too small for that throw. Hmm.

And sorry, what would be the problem? Too likely to cause damage to the paint?

Just a wild guess but you might be too much pressure on those pads with the long-throw DA. All of the machines designed for small intricate pads are light weight and speed is rather slow. So a larger DA will require less pressure and slower speeds to keep the heat down.

This is just a guess on my part, I have the Griot's Garage GG3 and G8 for those small panels. Plus have a new FLEX PXE still to unpack and all of them are small and light, much like the RUPES iBrid is light.

    Which DA are you using?

Thanks. That all makes good sense. I frankly don't anticipate using these small pads for more than an odd job once or twice a year, so didn't want to buy a small polisher for such limited use. Will probably just try these on an adapter with very low speed and pressure.

I have a PC and also a cordless of a brand not on AG.

If that doesn't work.....I'm over in the South Gate area. We can meet up, social distance style, masks of course, and you can use my PXE for those small areas
