    Let’s learn about vinyl wrap and protecting it.

    Hello Autogeeks,
    I did a search and nothing that related came up.

    I want this thread for us to learn, so I’ll volunteer my work van.

    From this point I’m interested in accomplishing the following.

    I’m asking because the vinyl wrap is a totally different beast all together. I don’t want to waste my time over trying to correct it.

    Keep in mind I live in Texas and the heat just beats down on it all day. I usually use Meguiar’s hybrid ceramic liquid wax.

    I do a hose rinse (no pressure washer). Very light washing, no hard pressing. Even drying is light, so just wondering.

    •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

    •Is it possible to safely remove swirls:scratches from black vinyl? Scratch is not nail deep at all.

    •How to safely protect it, what protection is best suited for it? A Ceramic?

    •Is it normal that my black vinyl is only 4 months old and already fading in some areas?

    As always thanks thanks

    If it's gloss vinyl, treat it like paint pretty much. Just be gentle with it, most finishing polishes should correct just fine.

    First...a few things to get out of the way:

    •What is the specific Brand (and the generation)
    of this wrap?

    •What finish does the wrap have [ex: matte;
    satin; gloss; (or some other)]?

    •Is there any “Warranty” (either expressed,
    or unexpressed) at play?

    TIA.

    @Will
    Should I use a complete polish I have lying around?

    Should I do it hand or 3” polisher?

    It’s “supposed” to be 3M.

    It’s the Gloss vinyl, I was going to get matte but then changed it.

    According to the installer it has a 3M 7 year warranty, it’s already peeling in some areas tho.

    Just for clarification is it 1080 or 2080?

    Did the installer give you a warranty or is he just quoting you 3m's warranty?

    Peeling is probably due to installer error. Typically over stretched and not post heated properly.

    @Ducksfan,

    I don’t know, I got the feeling he was beating around bush too much.

    He said he use quality inks and 3M vinyls, mine is glossy.

    I don’t know if it’s 1080 or 2080, he never ever said anything like that.

    He uses 3M 7 year warranty but like I said it’s peeling in some areas and fading in others.

    I’m just wondering if he he did it correctly, because my wife paid him a lot of money.

    .
    •IMO:
    -That is totally Unacceptable.

    •As such:
    -Stop whatever you are currently doing to
    the wrap: it’s time to invoke the expressed
    portion of this wrap’s 3M Warranty.

    Ok, he says he will fix it for 7 years. Take him up on it.

    Any fading will be a product issue (4 months and quality inks) or contamination of the laminate. Lifting is an installation issue (and he knows that).

    The 1080 and 2080 lines are color change wraps. I didn't know you had graphics. That's a different system. Graphics will have a clear laminate over them. So, there shouldn't be any color fading. Ask him what you should use to clean up the laminate.

    Re: Let’s learn about vinyl wrap and protecting it.

    If he tells you it wasn't over stretched, realize there are two factors at play here. There is the maximum amount the product can be stretched before distortion or failure. There is also an amount the product can be stretched without needing to be post heated. The second one is where the failure comes in. The installer probably either didn't post heat or didn't post heat properly.

    There's also preheating to relax the material prior to making a cut. This could make a difference too. But it doesn't matter in our discussion. It's all installation and the responsibility of the installer to do properly.

    The other possible reason for lifting is the surface wasn't prepped properly or wasn't adequate to bond the wrap. Since they prepped it and were responsible for inspecting the surface prior to taking the job, both of these would still be on them.
