Mother's Clay Kit vs. Meguiar's Clay Kit
I promised my neighbor I would help/show him how to detail his car before I have to head back to work. I've hooked him up with most of the supplies needed but we need to get some clay ASAP, so the choices available locally are the Mother's clay kit and the Meguiar's clay kit. Is either one preferrable over the other ? Did some research but all I could find was some anecdotal comments about the Megs leaving behind a bit of residue.
Thanks,
Rob

Never used the Mothers, but I think the Meg's kit is pretty damn good.
I mainly use synthetic now, but reach for the Meg's when there are tough spots down low on the truck. It never fails me.
It is no coincidence that man's best friend cannot talk.

I prefer the Mothers. I used the Meguiars once and it just felt weird like chewed bubble gum, then again I use Mothers all the time.
Both are good. Mothers is usually a little cheaper.

IMO:
-No need to overthink clay bar choices
for non-professional settings. As such:
-Either Kit (Clay + Lube) will suffice.
At their price range...why not get both Kits,
and let your neighbor decide which one fits
him the best.

I had a bad experience with generic clay bars. Stuck to the paint, left scratches, etc.
Now I only use Clay Magic or the blue Meguiars mild clay bars.
I used Meguiar's smooth surface clay kit (white bars) many years ago and it worked well. Not sure if they changed the product since though.

The new stuff is difficult to nead and seems to want to come apart for lack of a better word and seems old even after just 1-2 uses. The old stuff was way better than this new clay.
If you look closely you can see the wierd texture of the clay. This is prior to me using it today and I had bearly used this claybar once or twice.. So it’s not like it was an old bar.
Thanks for the warning & pics Eldo (and Spazzz), that clay definitely doesn't look right. Mother's it will be. Their kit contains a little more clay anyways, which might come in handy considering my neighbor has never done it before and may have a few drops.

Be careful. The mothers kit might not be any better.

Sad to hear about the Meguiars kit not being any good. It was my go-to kit for many years and I liked knowing it was available locally in stores if I needed clay in a hurry. I still think the Meguiars QD spray in the maroon bottle, which is part of the kit, is one of the best QD sprays on the market.

I've used the Mother's kit a few times and it's worked well for me. It did not have the problems the Meguiars has in this thread.
