Re: Do microfiber-specific detergents clean any better than "free & clear" detergents?
It seems to me that it’s a case of YMMV. I have all of my premium MFs since premium MFs came out and I’ve never washed them with MF specific detergent. All are still fine.

I must confess to being disappointed with Griot's MF cleaner ... you still need to use a "free & clear" laundry detergent in conjunction with the Griot's cleaner, and I didn't see much/any improvement vs. just using All Free & Clear by itself. Gonna try the Micro-Restore next time.

Give Tide Heavy Duty a shot. It’s been reasonable for me..

Tide really is great detergent. I doubt the microfiber detergents would be noticeably better than Tide.
Btw I used 3D Towel Kleen.

I will admit it will not get every single conceivable stain out of both MF and clothes. Don’t expect any detergent to get rid of old, ground in, heavy stains for example. Tide will get rid of fresh or newer stains though. The quicker you wash the clothes or MFs, the better chance you have of getting rid of the stains
When it comes to clothes, one product I’ve been happy with is the Oxi Clean Max Force gel stick. It really helps eliminate ring around the collar and new stains. I wouldn’t be without it and Tide when I do my laundry.

Really... i notice them to be much softer and felt my pfm’s performed better than just the F&C by itself. Maybe our machines make a difference too. Mines a front loader

Yep I forgot how machines can make a noticeable difference.

Even if this was the case, the cheaper MF detergents still cost a boat load more than All or something else you'd get at Target.

I bought a gallon of 3D Towel Kleen before the price increased during a sale. It was like 11 bucks? I can’t say I’ve noticed it cleaning substantially better (not enough to justify paying MORE than I would for free and clear) than what I was using before, but given a sale bringing the mf specific detergent to roughly equivalent pricing, I saw no reason to not try it out.
