How do you clean/dress tires in the winter? No hose.

Hello. I was just trying to figure out how I would go about cleaning my tires (not rims), in the winter without a hose. They look filthy, I want to clean them. I'm wondering what steps people take in clean their tires in the winter time.

Also, is there dressings out there that are safe to use on tires when the temperatures drop below zero? I feel like the dressing would how keep the tire cleaner longer, as it's not a part of the car I want to have to clean too often. If so I would want something with low shine, just want to keep them looking black. I have Silk Shine by Chemical Guys but I read that this product isn't supposed to hit freezing temperatures?

    Thanks in advance!

I use McKees 914 at paint prep (8:1) strength in a spray bottle. Spray, scrub, wipe and then apply a tire treatment (I use Opti Bond).

^^ What he said. I use waterless washes. I don’t use anything stronger than regular waterless strength. Spray tire down. Scrub with brush.... wipe with $h!+
Micro fibers. Doesnt get to cold here so usually go down to a pay for spray and do this and rinse the waterless off.

Ive used perl when freezing (28-32 usually in WA. Id recommend coating them before next winter...

I use N-914 from McKee's on a crap microfiber but I coated my tires. I really recommend using a tire coating as mine stay cleaner longer and with less work!

You know, I just did this and took pictures to show how I do it.

    Will write the article today.

We are no longer permitted to wash cars outside here at Autogeek. We used to all the time, but now it's not permitted in our lease.

I used the Mckee's Tire coating. I bought it here at AG. They have other reputable brands available still to buy from

I use whatever is left from my N-914 bucket. Dress as usual after drying with air (Metro Sidekick)

Wolfgang Uber is my rinseless solution of choice and at the end of the wash, I use a cheap Costco microfiber towel dipped in the solution. My wife's tires are coated with Tufshine so the cleaning is easier. For an uncoated tire, you will have to scrub it after you wipe it down with rinseless solution. Duragloss is a great water based dressing that will last longer than one rain or snow storm.

Give Mother's Tire Renew a try ... simply spray on and wipe off with an old MF towel, no water needed. It gets tires really clean and also does a good job of removing browning, so your tires will be ready for treatment.

Mothers Back to Black Tire Renew, tire cleaner

As for tire dressings, I like Duragloss 253, but it, like other similar products, warns in the MSDS to "avoid freezing temperatures". While that warning is under the "Storage" notes, I would say it applies to usage as well ... many of these products are water-based emulsions, and as a result, very cold temps will affect/degrade the emulsion.
