    Jescar Powerlock Plus - silicon?

    Hi folks,

Thanks for all the tips gleaned over the years and will certainly start off by stating that I am by no means an 'expert', just a person who enjoys weekend detailing. I have been a very long term user of Jescar Powerlock Plus and have resisted ceramic coatings (don't want to dive into why here as I know it may be controversial!). I love it because the sealant lasts a very long time (above other things like cost, ease of use, etc).

Am I reading the MSDS of Powerlock Plus right? This paint sealant has silicone in it, or better yet, the stuff that you find in ceramic coatings.

I'll attach the MSDS for both Powerlock plus and Silex's 9H. I'm not a chemist, so I had to take a look at what the active ingredient is for ceramic coatings, and it's this: PDMS. https://blog.iglcoatings.com/the-sci...amic-coatings/

Hmm, seems like it won't accept my attachment. I'll copy/paste the relevant MSDS links where I talked about this on Audiworld (I own a 2019 A8). (mods please remove links if this breaks the rules here. I have no idea!)

Can you experts pls provide some additional clarification here? Was PowerLock Plus indeed some fancy pre-ceramic type of coating before it became popular? Was it unique to Powerlock plus or was PDMS typically found in sealants across the board?

    Thank you!

According to the msds the PowerLock has Polydimethysiloxane which is a silicone
Si02 is silicon dioxide, which I say claimed to me in most coatings
Very different bases and the answer to your question is no

Thanks for the insight and that is also another reason for my confusion. As posted for the Silex one, SIO2 is not in the MSDS and as per the PDMS link in the article, PDMS is the main 'ingredient' in ceramic coatings.

I can't pull up the msds but I'd guess the PDMS is used as a bonding agent or a carrier that is used to spread the silicon. The msds has come up a few times here and is not always 100% helpful (trade secrets), all I can tell you is silicone and silicon are not the same

Interesting. This is not in line with the article here The Science of Ceramic Coatings - IGL Coatings Blog and the bonding agent/carrier is actually the silane functional group but duly noted and will continue my research. I should have paid more attention in University to all of my chemistry courses! Sadly, was too busy slacking off.

If I remember right pdms can be altered to silicon oxycarbide or Sic. I'll have to check later on that

Re: Jescar Powerlock Plus - silicon?

Silicon is one of the naturally occurring elements

    Silicones are synthetic (man-made), silicon-based
    polymers

    Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is one variant
    of silicon-based (ie: silicone) polymers

    ****************************************

•Because it appears that Powerlock contains PDMS...
You ask: is that an indication that it either was, (or
    wasn’t), a harbinger of ceramic-based Coatings?

-IMO, You have to first define:
Of what ingredient(s) must products be constituted
from, or contain, in order for them to be considered
    as being ceramic-based?

    -Then, secondly:
    When it comes to: Silicon; Silicon Dioxide (SiO2);
    Silica; and Quartz...Is there a line-of-demarcation?

Re: Jescar Powerlock Plus - silicon?

I do recall the IGL products (EcoCoat Wax, possibly Premier also) using siloxane and silane as main ingredients, but haven’t been able to comprehend what that means compared to SiO2.... but the products sure look, feel and act like top-notch ceramic products.
