When do I use a hard backing plate vs a flexible backing plate?

I need to remove some scratches from glass ( car and aquarium), and also general compound, wax use (car). Buying the GG6 but also want a 3 inch backing plate for the glass work due to some tight spaces. The only 3 inch backing plate I see for the GG6 is a hard plate.
