Nah, closer to 5'9". Why? Do you know a 7ft tall Hawaiian carnauba connoisseur?

From a 'family member': "You will void the factory warranty by polishing and waxing. That's why they use that clear coat stuff. The salesman told me."

One of the more recently amusing anecdotes was someone musing how coatings are just snake oil and do not work. Also that sealants also do not work - only carnauba wax will work to protect a car's finish. It was something like that.

He also said that foam pads do not cut paint under any circumstances.... He structured his opinions with embellishments that in a way that both reinforced the perception of his expertise, and guarded them from scrutiny.

These statements in and of them self are not all that much of a problem. The problem was that he provided no evidence to the claims when asked, and beligerently defend his claims when contrary evidence was presented.

    That was an odd experience.

Re: Post Your Most Uneducated Comments Ever Received In Detailing History

I don't know if this is the right spot, something I have been wanting to share. Last summer I had the owner of pretty much the only detail shop in town come into my work. Since I had him there, I mentioned I noticed his truck, lettered with his business. I quickly mentioned coating, and ask if he did them, his reply " Oh yea", I asked which he used, his reply " Theres about 80 different one out there, they are all just a gimmick, wax last longer". I just thanked him for the info and that was it.

About a month ago a thread here was talking about pricing, I took an interest and looked around my area, which I really only found the one shop. I called them, told him I wanted to get my ride shined up this spring. He told me a wash, decon, and wax was $89 to add interior was a total of $115. But then he said there is a new thing called a ceramic coating that just came out on the market 6 months ago, and guaranteed to last five year! Plus the coating price was $379. What a deal.

One of the guys at the dealership's body shop told me that I should never wash the car with any type of soap, just with water with some drops of alcohol and a mop head. Can you believe that? To this day I still think if he was trolling me or he was being serious.

    SLIGHTLY off-topic:

Co-worker was arguing with me about my displeasure with all the winter salt and brine the township puts on the roads.
He said, "I don't know why you are so upset- it's not like they would put anything on the roads that was bad for cars....."

If dawn is safe enough for a baby duck then it is safe for my paint.

I recently detailed this woman's car and when I was done she told me "wow I didn't know it could shine like that!"
