    Mold Removal From Fabric Top

submitted a minute ago by StockDC2
Hello, I just purchased a lot of mold (and a Westfalia that happened to come with it) and am having a hard time removing the stains. I've already bleached, Borax'd, and scrubbed the fabric but the mold is still there. Does anyone have any insight on what I should try next?

    Here are the pictures.

    Thanks in advance!

I wish I had something more positive to say, but I hope the rest of the Westy is in better shape! Autogeek has some mold cleaners, but I don't know how effective any of them will be on something that widespread and old. You also have to consider the effect any cleaner strong enough to do some good may have on the waterproofness of the canvas. Since you have it removed from the van, have you taken it to a professional cleaning service to see what they can do? How much does a new canvas cost? Another option you might consider would be to dye the canvas a darker color.

Whatever you do to the old fabric, it'll need to have the water repellency refreshed. AG has some options for that, too.

Convertible Top Care Detailing 101: clean and protect vinyl and fabric convertible tops.

Please tell us more about the VW; a few photos would be nice. I've always liked them, from the Type 2 on.

Thanks so much for the info!

The rest of the car is in excellent shape. I'm not home right now to take pictures but will definitely take them for you tomorrow.

Btw, since I've already bleached and Borax'd, is it safe to use the canvas even though the spots are there? If it's still a health hazard, I'll definitely need to figure something else out.

I'd be surprised if anything scary remains on the canvas after all of that. Just make sure it's fully dry before folding it up.
