    Metal halide

    I am looking at light chart to see what is the closes thing to sunlight. I found that metal halide produce more white light. The only draw back is that their expensive and the amount of lumens it produces is really strong. I think this is over kill but I might be wrong.

    Has anyone try this light on a car to find scratches. What do you use to find swirl marks without sunlight?

    Reading your post brings visions of Chevy Chase and Christmas Vacation to mind

    What sort of fixture would you use? I have a pretty strong cycling light that I occasionally use that produces 600 lumens and there are times when I think this is a bit of an overkill.

    Re: Metal halide

    I'm trying to find the perfect ligh to find swirl marks without sunlight. I have bought a Xenon Hi-Beam. Did a test on my sunset Orange 350z and it was not good to find swirl. I will test this light again with distance and see if they show up more. I'm getting ready to start my first year of detailing once it gets nice and warm in Chicago.

    Re: Metal halide

    When I use my cycling light, I find that I have to put some distance between the paint and the light. The center of the beam is so bright, it's hard to find the swirls. But if I pull the light away and focus away from the center, I start to find the swirls. Detecting swirls on a color like sunset orange...I can understand the challenge.

    I will experiment with the lighting once I start to detail my Z.
    I was never a fan of black cars. I like color cars but the colors vary for each car to look good.

    Metal Halide is a very rich UV source. Good chance of
    a bad case of sunburn depending how close you are
    to the lamp and how long you are exposed to it;
    lots of heat as well.

    Do yourself a favor and go to LED lights. I have them in our shop and they show things direct sunlight doesn't

    Ok for sure I will try them out. I was going to get a led tripod that was around $100 at home depot
