Same... My last speeding ticket was 3 years ago. $600 later and a court appearance no more for me. Keep in mind a cop can still pull you over for doing 5-7mph over the speedlimit... so i still use mine for the peace of mind.

To the original poster though, a radar detector will not solve your problem it actually will make your problem worse. The biggest mistake with people who get radar detectors is they have a false sense of confidence that they can speed and end up getting caught more in worse situations. Food for though.

This much is true however the V1 is great and IMO the best

Swanic this is true as well but I can't drive 55 or 65 or 75 for that matter. My commute is 70 miles one way and driving fast is just part of the nature of doing business. Most days I hit 100 - 110 on my way to work and around 90 coming home. One year I tried to give up speeding for Lent. Wow that was very difficult. I'm trying so hard to slow down but where most people when they drive just see traffic, I see a NASCAR racetrack with large numbers on the cars ahead of me.

    Re: Best radar detectors.

Thanks, guys! I'll do more study on V1 and Escort before pulling the trigger. I usually stay within 5 MPH of a speed limit on a freeway, but tend to break that rule in the city and a bit faster. And thats what happened - 59 in a 45 zone. And its a bummer that only a couple blocks later speed limit was 55...

Dude, slow down. Maintaining that kind of speed on a crowded public road is crazy.

Can some one explain what the different bands actually represent? I am also looking for a radar detector. I had a cheap cobra years ago and it told me when a train was approaching. Now I don't know about you guys but never in my life have I though " those pesky trains... If only there was a device that let me know when one was coming" lol so I don't need all the bells and whistles. I just need something that picks up cops radar guns and their constant speed monitor. Forgive my ignorance but what bands would those be?

out of curiousity, how far away do these radar detectors detect a cop holding a radar gun from a corner street?

Xband- 95% are false alarms, ie garage door openers and automatic doors at lets say a cvs or something
K-band- This could be a cop on his radio or again automatic doors.
KA band- this is a radar gun
    Laser- Laser Gun

Radar guns must hit your car, bounce back and go back to the gun. So hypothetically you have 5 seconds or so to slow down.

If cop is sitting there hes probably shot someone ahead of you so you'll pick it up earlier. What most people do not realize is cops are not always using a radar gun. A cop can be driving next to you or behind you at 65mph and still catch you speeding. Also a cop can be sitting at a corner and watch you speed by and catch you. Cops are trained by eye to tell how fast your going within a certain range, i believe 1-2mph. They're constantly tested to ensure they are accurate. Simply put, if used right, Radar detectors are great. If used to become mr. speedracer on local parkways... your screwed.

I have an Escort 8500 x50 (and a 9500i that i dont really use). It really depends on the surroundings. I've picked up signal from as far as about 3/4 mile on rural highways.

For the most part, cops in the chicagoland area dont keep their radars on... they wait til someone looks like they're speeding, then throw it on to get their speed. Sometimes they'll keep them on, though. One area it really helps with, is if you have speed cameras, since those are always on. They're usually pointed at the back of cars, but lots of times, they are accross the street from each other, so you'll catch radar from the other radar.

Been there - done that. When I was younger and dumber, I had "suspensions" from PennDot for "points violations" from tickets from speeding. Since I need a car to get to work, this was not good. So, both times I had to hire an attorney that dealt with traffic issues. I think it cost me $1200 the first time and maybe $3k the second IIR.

I think the first suspension was going to be for a month - the second a year. Somehow the lawyer squeaked me out of both of them. Then, I realized it's just a lot cheaper not to speed. Plus, you look like a complete idiot telling people you can't do this or that because your driver's license is suspended.
