    Continued...

    1969 Camaro
    Hugger Orange
Numbers matching 396 Big Block with 4-speed

    Before

    Clay results

We could feel contaminants but nothing shows on the clay - my guess is --> clear overspray paint.

    First Test Spot

First we're going to test the RUPES Quarz Gloss with the RUPES Green Foam Pad

After 8 section passes, we wipe off and inspect with the SCANGRIP Sunmatch Swirl Finder Light and what we're seeing is light micro-marring.

This is a cropped out section of the above.

    Conclusion

The Quarz Gloss was aggressive enough to remove the majority of the deepest paint defects but either it or the pad was leaving light micro-marring in the paint.

    Second Test Spot

Next we will test the RUPES Keramik Gloss with the RUPES yellow foam pad

Before on both sides of the tape line

Next we did 8 section passes

Wipe off and inspect with the SCANGRIP Sunmatch

This looks great. These are acceptable results.

Out of the two test spots on the hood, the Kermaik Gloss compound with the RUPES yellow pad looked like it would do the job in one-step.

After the test spots, I had my good friend Craig and Frank start at the top and the plan was to work their way down until they had buffed out the entire car. BUT... after polishing on the roof Craig found deeper scratches were still in the paint after wiping off and inspecting. Our goal was a show car finish, this means around 90% to 95% defect removal.

    Blue/Blue

The Yellow/Yellow RUPES combination was leaving a nice finish but not removing all the defects while the Green/Green was removing all the defects but not leaving an acceptable finish. So next we tested my favorite combination and that is the RUPES Zephir Gloss Coarse compound with the very aggressive RUPES blue foam pads and true to my experience, this combination on this specific paint on this Camaro removed 95% + of the defects and left an incredibly nice finish. So the guys re-fitted their polishers with blue foam pads and went to work.

    After

    Current status
As of this morning, the car looks just like you see in the last 4 pictures above. The paint has only been compounded, nothing else.

Thank you to both Frank and Craig for handling the paint correction process for this Camaro while I worked on another project.

Hey Mike, Scott here with the dark red IROC-Z you saw in Orlando. I was planning on going to MTE this year and will stop by the booth. Not guaranteed that I'll be there though. Hopefully I can get there.

    Hello, Uncle Mike
I saw the red camaro for your show-car project, aiming to remove 90-95% of the defects on the paint. You use the yellow pad + keramik gloss (fine) in the second test spot..

Do you use blue pad + zephir only for positions where yelow pad + keramik can not remove the scratch? Or did you use the blue pad + zephir for the entire paint surface in one step? and then finish your job

Re: Two project cars for Mobile Tech Expo Classes

Could you tell me about 8 section passes with rupes? set up speed?hand speed? compound ? I know that each person has their own method. I want to know to refer to myself, thank you for sharing

I usually use the following. Does it have the correct? my polisher Rupes mark II 15mm
Step 1: Blue pad + zephir => I removed the scratch. My finish on the paint surface is the micro swirl (I'm much exposed to the Japanese car)
I set the zephyr to blue pad (5 drops), set 1 speed, 2 passes move hands quickly on the section (40 -45 cm), next set 4 speed, move slow hand, 50-50 over lap, 4 passes up - down / left - right and cover.
Step 2: Yelow pad + Keramik => finish
Step 3: White pad + diamond (if dark colour)

    I'm right ? Uncle Mike.
